VocArt is a vocabulary-learning app built around hand-crafted illustrated scenes - think about it as living picture dictionary you can tap your way through. Each artwork is a series of wide, detailed illustrations made by independent artists: two collections are genuinely hand-drawn, one is hand-guided with AI assistance. Tap any object in a scene to reveal its word, translation, romanization, and gender - all supported with soft ambient sounds that match the mood of each chapter. There's no drilling, no streaks, no pressure. Just you, beautiful art, and words that stick because you found them yourself.

Available on iOS and Android. Supports 17 languages.

Features

  • Hand-crafted illustrations - Two out of three artwork collections are 100% hand-drawn by independent artists (Vietnam, Turkey). The third blends hand-crafting with AI assistance (Indonesia). Every scene is detailed, unique and made with care.
  • Ambient soundscapes - Each chapter has its own background sound atmosphere (kitchen sounds, beach vibes, shower in the bathroom) that plays softly while you explore. Fully toggleable.
  • Tap-to-learn markers - Circular interactive markers sit on objects inside scenes. Tap one to get the word, native translation, romanization for non-Latin scripts, and article/gender info.
  • No drills, no pressure - There are no mandatory exercises, timed tests or daily streaks. Open the app, walk through a scene, tap what catches your eye, close it. That's a valid session.
  • Progress that feels light - Markers shift from grey (new) to blue (learned) to red (needs review) as you go. Chapter progress rings fill up quietly in the background.
  • 17 languages supported - Arabic, German, English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Chinese. Native language is auto-detected from your device.
  • Pronunciation audio - Optional spoken audio per word. Free users can unlock one full chapter in one language to try before buying. Lifetime unlock is $6.99.
  • Works offline - All vocabulary runs on a local database. Downloaded audio caches on device. No connection needed to learn.
  • Artist profiles - Each artwork includes a dedicated screen about the illustrator behind it.

Use Cases

  • Casual daily learners who want something pleasant to open for 5 minutes, not a 20-lesson commitment.
  • Visual learners who remembers words better when they see them placed in a context - on an actual kitchen counter, in a garden, on a road trip.
  • Beginners building everyday vocabulary - themes like Food & Kitchen, Holidays & Travels, and House cover the practical words people actually need first.
  • Multilingual households - quickly switch target language; the app auto-sets your native language from device locale.
  • Art lovers who also want to learn - the illustrations are genuinely worth looking at. The learning is almost a side effect.
  • People burned out on gamified apps - no streaks to maintain, no penalty for missing a day, no leaderboard anxiety. Pure exploration.
  • Learners of script-heavy languages - romanization support for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese makes non-Latin scripts approachable from day one.

The app has been live for four years. It had a moment when got 15,000 active users / month in Vietnam, top 100 charts there — but it never really broke through beyond that. I'm a solo developer and I'm not a marketer. I've been building and maintaining the whole thing alone, which means the product is pretty solid but getting it in front of people has been the hard part. If you're curious about the app, how it works or whats coming next - I'm very happy to talk. And if you have thoughts on how to grow something like this, I'd love to hear them. - Christopher
