I'd done the Duolingo streak. I could conjugate verbs I'd never use, but I stood in the supermarket not knowing the word for the thing in my hand. Flashcard apps gave me someone else's list: "airport", "lawyer", "the economy". Not the plant on my windowsill, not my neighbour's dog, not the tool the plumber was pointing at. Words with nothing attached to them, so by Thursday they were gone. And the practice was homework. Open app, flip cards, feel guilty, close app. So I built the thing I wanted. Point your camera at the object in front of you, get its name in the language you're learning, and it's saved with your photo. Your vocabulary becomes a record of what you actually looked at. When you've collected enough, the words turn into eight small games built only from your own captures. Practice stops being a chore because every round is about your stuff. Two things I refused to compromise on: your photos never sit on my servers, and your whole wordbook exports to a file you own. If I disappear tomorrow, your words don't.
