ScrollSmack: Screen Time Roast

Tough-love screen time limits that roast you mid-scroll

Visit

ScrollSmack is a screen time app for people who ignore gentle reminders. Choose the apps you doomscroll, set a continuous-use limit, and arm the timer. Cross the limit and ScrollSmack takes over the screen with a full roast from one of eight personas - The Disappointed Mom, The Gym Bro, The Petty Ex, and friends. The only way back in is typing "I am wasting my time" letter for letter. That small moment of friction breaks autopilot. Fully offline: no accounts, no ads, no analytics, no data leaves the phone. Free on Google Play.

Features

Continuous-use limits, not daily totals - step away and the timer resets

Full-screen roast overlay when the limit trips; the Back button is locked

8 personas with 40 pre-written roasts; never the same persona twice in a row

Typed unlock phrase - "I am wasting my time" - to dismiss the overlay

100% offline: no INTERNET permission, no accounts, no ads, zero tracking

Free on Google Play

Use Cases

Breaking a doomscrolling habit the moment it happens, not after

Keeping Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or Reddit sessions short and intentional

A private screen time tool for people who want zero accounts and zero tracking

Comments

The continuous-use timer resetting after a break is a useful detail. Is there an emergency bypass or allowlist for apps like maps and authentication, so an overlay never blocks a time-sensitive task? That could keep the intervention helpful without trapping someone at the wrong moment.

The typed unlock phrase is a smart bit of friction — a tap-to-dismiss would just become muscle memory, but typing "I am wasting my time" forces you to actually read it. I also like that it's fully offline with no accounts; I made the same call in my own Android app and users really do notice it. Curious how the continuous-use timer decides you've "stepped away" — is there a fixed idle threshold before it resets?

Built this after realizing every screen time app just shows you a chart of what you already lost. ScrollSmack interrupts you mid-scroll instead: cross your continuous-use limit and one of eight personas takes over your screen until you type "I am wasting my time" letter for letter. Fully offline - no accounts, no ads, no tracking. Happy to answer any questions.

Fun concept and a refreshing take on screen-time apps. The different roast personas and the “I am wasting my time” unlock make the intervention much more memorable than yet another generic reminder.

The continuous-use limit resetting when you step away is pretty interesting, and it is the thing most screen time apps get wrong by counting daily totals. I build in this space too (screen-time iOS), so I am curious about the typed phrase: does it stay effective after a few weeks, or do people learn to type it without reading? That is the part I would watch.

Love this. Does it have a function to only work during work hours etc.?
