Reckon: Decision Journal

In the order you meet them:

- Log the decision. A sentence or two on what you expect, a confidence percentage, and a review date. Add a domain if you want the breakdowns later: career, health, or one of your own.

- Check-ins. Add one whenever something changes: what you learned, tagged positive or negative, and where your confidence sits now. Two weeks before the review date Reckon reminds you to check in, and the lead time is yours to set per decision.

- Resolution. When the date arrives you log what happened, whether the call was correct, and how satisfied you are with it. Correct and satisfied are separate answers, because a right call can still leave you unhappy.

- Follow-up. Sixty days after resolution, or an interval you choose, one more question: would you make this call again? The record keeps that answer next to the first one.

- Timeline. Every decision carries its confidence as a line, check-in by check-in, so when it resolves you can find the turn and read the note you left there.

- Calibration. When you said you're 80% confident, how often were you right? Reckon plots stated confidence against outcomes, marks where it overshoots and where it undershoots, and repeats the picture per domain. It also shows the gap between how sure you were and how satisfied you ended up.

- iPhone and iPad. Synced over iCloud, no account, no server of mine in between.

Reckon is for decisions where the outcome takes a while to arrive. Some that fit:

- Hiring. You expect the new hire to be carrying real work within six months, and you put a number on it. The first months fill the check-ins, the review date asks whether you were right, and two months later Reckon asks whether you'd hire them again.

- A job offer. Predict how you'll feel about it a year in, and let the check-ins hold what the interviews left out.

- Money. An investment, a house, a car at the edge of what you can afford. The confidence you wrote down before paying is the one number hindsight can't adjust.

- Health. A treatment, a new doctor, a training plan you've promised yourself before. Tag these with a domain and the breakdown later shows whether it's one you read well.

- Shipping. A feature, a price change, a rewrite. You hold opinions on how these will go before they go out, and a check-in a week after launch is where the opinion gets checked.

- Family. Which school, whether to move, whether to get the dog. Nobody else keeps a record of these, so the doubts you had at the time are the first thing to go.

What they share is a gap between deciding and knowing, and that gap is what Reckon records.
