The free plugin already covers what a real multilingual site needs: native URL routing (/en/, /de/), the complete SEO stack (hreflang, canonical tags, sitemaps, html lang), and translation of posts, media and theme or plugin strings inside Gutenberg. Under the hood it uses an overlay model, one canonical post with translations layered on top, so nothing is duplicated, the database stays clean and performance holds at a 100 PageSpeed score. As an optional extra, a Pro version adds AI translation on a bring your own key basis, connecting your own OpenAI account so you pay the provider at cost with no markup, plus one click whole site translation.
Why it's better: Polylang and WPML either duplicate every post per language or lock the essentials behind a paid tier, and their machine translation runs on credit packs on top of the license.
