Offline-first is a huge differentiator here. Most Bates numbering tools force you to upload sensitive documents to the cloud, which is a dealbreaker for law firms. How does BatesKit handle re-numbering if pages are inserted mid-batch, and is there a CLI for scripted batch jobs?

The "production checks" line is doing a lot of quiet work — what's actually in it? Specifically: does redaction strip the text layer and burn the image, and do you generate a load file (DAT/OPT with BEGBATES/ENDBATES)? Offline + real load file output would be the actual differentiator against the cloud tools, more than the numbering itself.

Really like the privacy-first approach here. The fact that BatesKit processes everything locally, while also combining Bates numbering with metadata, redaction, and production QA checks, makes it much more useful than a simple PDF stamper. Great execution on a very specific problem.

"Files never leave your device" is doing a lot of work in this category and it is the right call. Discovery material is exactly the kind of data where a cloud round-trip is not a performance question but a compliance one. The line I would put front and centre is real text layer stamping with CropBox and rotation support. That sounds like a footnote and it is actually the whole game — plenty of stampers write to MediaBox, and the numbers then drift or vanish once a page has a CropBox or a /Rotate that disagrees. Scanned productions are full of both. Question: when a source PDF has a CropBox offset from its MediaBox, does the stamp position against the visible crop or the underlying page? And does the numbering survive a later flatten by a third-party viewer?

Question on the redaction step, since that is where PDF tools quietly fail: does it remove the text from the content stream, or draw a black box over it? The famous leaks all came from files where the words were still selectable underneath. Same for XMP and embedded metadata after stamping - if the QA check confirms both of those in a report, that report is the feature I would put on the page, more than the numbering itself.
